At 17 years old, Shane spends most of his time doing what he loves — lifting weights, boxing, playing basketball, and training in the gym five days a week. Staying active has always been a huge part of who he is.
Before his amputation, he spent his time skating, riding dirt bikes, and playing sports with friends. Then, in April 2023, a dirt bike accident in Talking Rock, Georgia changed everything.
A Life-Changing Accident
While attempting a jump at a dirt bike track, Shane came up short and crashed, causing severe fractures and vascular damage to his leg.
“I blinked and I was on the ground,” Shane recalled.
The injuries ultimately led to amputation, followed by multiple surgeries, skin grafts, and a long rehabilitation process. But throughout recovery, Shane stayed focused on getting back to the life he loved.
“It’s all about mindset,” he said. “If you tell yourself you can do it, you can do it.”
The Challenges of Traditional Prosthetics
As an active teenager, Shane quickly realized that finding the right prosthetic solution wasn’t easy.
Over the first few years following his amputation, he went through five different prosthetic legs while dealing with discomfort, sores, rubbing spots, and ongoing fit issues.
“He’s three years post-op his amputation, and he’s had five legs,” Shane’s mother explained. “He did have lots of issues with legs prior to this — sores, rubbing spots, things like that that were very uncomfortable.”
At one point, irritation became severe enough that Shane required an incision and drainage procedure after developing a painful spot on the back of his residual limb. Because of previous injuries and hardware in his leg, comfort and customization became especially important.
Waterproof reliability was another major challenge for Shane and his family.
“We’re very much a water family,” his mother shared. “We’re from Florida, so we love the water. We love cruising.”
Although one of Shane’s previous prosthetic systems was advertised as water resistant, the experience didn’t fully match the reality. After a family cruise, moisture exposure caused issues with the vacuum pump in his prosthesis.
“We thought he could do this, but he really couldn’t, not until he got his UniLeg,” his mother explained.
That experience made the idea of a truly waterproof prosthesis especially meaningful.
Discovering the Limber UniLeg
It was Shane’s mother, Deanne, who initially came across the Limber UniLeg on instagram. What immediately stood out was how different it looked from traditional prosthetics. “When I saw somebody doing everything in water and walking around with the foot without having to worry about anything getting into it, I was sold,” she said. “I knew I had to reach out.”
For Shane and his family, the fully waterproof design opened the door to activities they previously had to think twice about. The lightweight build and customized fit also addressed many of the comfort issues Shane had experienced with previous prostheses.
After receiving his UniLeg at Shamrock Prosthetics (Atlanta, GA), the difference became apparent almost immediately.
“Nothing but good thoughts,” Shane said. “It’s amazing.”
Lightweight Comfort for an Active Lifestyle
One of the biggest changes for Shane has been how naturally the UniLeg fits into his daily life.
Because the socket could be customized around sensitive areas and existing hardware in his leg, many of the irritation and fit issues Shane previously struggled with disappeared.
“He’s not had any issues with the spot on the back of his leg that he had surgery for,” Shane’s mother shared.
The lightweight feel also made a major impact.
“It’s so light that I honestly forget I’m wearing it sometimes,” Shane said. “I’ll put it on first thing in the morning and wear it all day without even thinking about it. That’s something I’ve never really had before.”
For someone who spends five days a week in the gym and regularly trains in boxing, comfort alone isn’t enough. Shane needs a prosthesis that can keep up with an active lifestyle—something lightweight enough for long days on his feet, durable enough to handle demanding workouts, and stable enough to support the quick movements and footwork required in the boxing gym. The UniLeg checks all the boxes.
“It lets me focus on what I’m doing instead of thinking about my leg,” Shane said. “Whether I’m lifting, training, hanging out with friends, or just going through my day, it’s comfortable, it feels natural, and it keeps up with me.”
He wears it throughout long days without discomfort and relies on it as his primary day-to-day prosthesis.
For Shane, the biggest benefits are simple: “Waterproof, lightweight, comfortable.”
Looking Ahead
Today, Shane continues training consistently while preparing for his next stage of life after graduating high school this summer. He also hopes to compete in bodybuilding one day.
His story reflects more than physical recovery — it’s about returning to the activities, confidence, and independence that matter most. Shane even dreams of competing in bodybuilding one day.
With the right mindset and the right prosthetic technology, Shane has been able to get back to living life on his terms.
